The husband-and-wife duo were involved in a year-long storyline with Aiden English from October 2017 to October 2018 — something neither of them wanted to end — and Rusev has since had a forgettable one-month reign with the United States Championship.
Their most recent televised appearance came on the February 5 episode of SmackDown Live when Rusev joined forces with unlikely new ally Shinsuke Nakamura to defeat The Club.
Many fans believe Rusev and Lana deserve better opportunities, so how should WWE try to solve that?
Let’s take a look at five ways to save “The Bulgarian Brute” and “The Ravishing Russian” from becoming another mediocre mid-card act…
#5 Rusev winning streak
There is always a danger when an undefeated streak ends that someone can quickly become just another member of the roster, and that’s exactly what happened with Rusev in 2015.
Following his United States Championship defeat against John Cena at WrestleMania 31, Rusev lost a further two PPV matches to “Big Match John”, and by the end of the year he had also been pinned by Cesaro, Ryback, Roman Reigns and Dolph Ziggler.
I’m not saying “The Bulgarian Brute” should go another full year without being pinned or made to submit, but it’s alarming that his longest televised winning streak since 2016 is just three matches.
With a few more victories under his belt, the three-time United States champion will be taken more seriously the next time he wins a secondary title or challenges for the WWE Championship.
