Match 3: Asuka (c) vs. Mandy Rose w/Sonya Deville – SmackDown Women’s Championship
Background: Mandy Rose feigned an eye injury on a recent episode of SmackDown Live and picked up a shenanigan-heavy non-title win over Asuka. It was later announced that the two will go one-on-one for the SmackDown Women’s Championship at Fastlane. Asuka had the last laugh on Tuesday’s SmackDown, attacking both Rose and Sonya Deville on the stage.
Summary: Deville caused multiple distractions early on, allowing Rose to take advantage with a spell of offence and a couple of knees to Asuka’s face. In the end, Deville’s tricks backfired as she pulled out a kendo stick and left part of the ring skirt underneath the bottom rope. Rose then slipped on the ring skirt and ran into a vicious kick to the face from Asuka, who got the 1-2-3. Rose walked away from her tag partner post-match.
Verdict: Wow, wow, wow. Remember when Asuka lost to Carmella at Extreme Rules 2018 with all those James Ellsworth antics? This feels like a similar situation, only with the interference backfiring on this occasion. Asuka is WWE’s best female Superstar, but this storyline was not about her and the finish was comical… and not in a good way!
