One of the most surprising moments of the week in WWE came when Bobby Lashley defeated Finn Balor, courtesy of interference from Lio Rush, to win back the Intercontinental Championship on the March 11 episode of Raw. The outcome was a big surprise, especially considering that Balor had only been champion for 22 days, and now everybody is left wondering what both men will do at WrestleMania 35. Let’s take a look at four theories why WWE decided to take the title off the Irishman…
#4 The IC title reign was never about Finn Balor
Finn Balor was defeated by Brock Lesnar in a Universal Championship match at the Royal Rumble. Immediately after the event, the former NXT champion set his sights on a new title, the Intercontinental Championship, and he surprisingly won the title from Bobby Lashley by pinning Lio Rush in a handicap match at Elimination Chamber.
Since then, everything to do with the Intercontinental Championship has been less about Balor and more about the dysfunctional relationship between Lashley and Rush. Now that the duo are reunited, or at least it seems that way after Rush helped “The All Mighty” win on Monday, they have the conclusion to the story that they wanted. Balor, meanwhile, was merely a stop-gap champion while his rivals settled their differences.
