#1 WWE has bigger plans for Finn Balor
Let’s face it, based on the stats I just listed about the number of days that Superstars have held the Intercontinental Championship recently, the title is not going to be seen as a priority at WrestleMania 35. Like two years ago at WrestleMania 33, where Dean Ambrose defended it against Baron Corbin on the kickoff show, it would not be at all surprising if it featured on the kickoff show again this year. And if not the kickoff show, then its best possible placement would likely be a multi-man ladder match on the main card.
So, where does Finn Balor fit into this? Well, the most plausible theory as to why he has lost the title is that WWE has a plan for him at WrestleMania 35 which is much bigger than the Intercontinental Championship. The Irishman is yet to have a one-on-one match at “The Show of Shows”, having taken part in a Triple Threat with The Miz and Seth Rollins in his one and only ‘Mania so far.
There are plenty of possible singles opponents for Balor, from John Cena to The Undertaker, but the most likely match for the Irishman appears to be against Kurt Angle. The Hall of Famer announced on Monday’s episode of Raw that he will compete in his farewell match at WrestleMania 35 but, as of the time of writing, his opponent is unclear. Perhaps that’s where Balor could come in.
